Want to switch to a new Apple ID on your iPhone but find the Sign Out button greyed out with the message “Sign Out is not available due to restrictions”? Wondering why this happens and how to fix it? This guide will walk you through the reasons behind the issue and show you effective ways to resolve it.

Why Can’t I Sign Out of My Apple ID Due to Restrictions
There are possible reasons why this issue occurs on your iPhone:
- Screen Time is enabled.
- Your device is managed by an MDM profile.
- Parental controls are turned on.
- The Focus feature is enabled.

How to Solve Sign Out of Apple ID Due to Restrictions Issue on iPhone
Enabled Screen Time is usually the main reason for the "can’t sign out of Apple ID" issue on your iPhone. However, this doesn’t mean that you have to turn off Screen Time feature to remove Apple ID from your device. We will introduce useful ways to solve the issue without turning off Screen Time. In addition, we’ll also show other methods unrelated to Screen Time to help you fix the issue with the highest success rate.
Fix 1: Allow Account Changes
This setting is a prerequisite. If this setting is not enabled, no other fix will get you past the sign-out restriction while keeping Screen Time enabled. What’s happening here is simple: when Screen Time is turned on, it can silently block account-level changes through Content & Privacy Restrictions which includes signing out of your Apple ID.
There are two possible solutions:
- If you set up Screen Time yourself, you can re-enable account changes with the passcode you remember.
- If your device is part of a Family Sharing group and Screen Time is managed by a parent, the change must be made from the parent’s device.
In either case above, Account Changes must be turned on from Screen Time to proceed.
Steps to Allow Account Changes on iPhone
Step 1. Head to Settings and scroll down to Screen Time. Once inside, select Content & Privacy Restrictions.

For parents using Family Sharing: You need to tap your child’s name under the Family section in Screen Time first to reach Content & Privacy Restrictions.

Step 2. You can either turn off the toggle entirely or scroll to Allow Changes To: > Account, and set it to Allow.

Additionally, you can choose to turn off the main toggle at the top for Content & Privacy Restrictions. You’ll be prompted to enter your Screen Time passcode. Type it in and the setting will switch off.

Wait a few seconds. Now, go back to the Apple ID section in Settings. The Sign Out option should now appear in red.
Fix 2: Turn off App & Web Activity and Then on
This adjustment is helpful when your Screen Time settings are syncing across multiple devices via iCloud. Here, the culprit is the Share Across Devices setting that blocks Apple ID sign-out. All you have to do is temporarily turn off that sync.
Steps to Turn Off App & Web Activity and Turn back On
Step 1. Go to Settings, tap Screen Time and turn off Share Across Devices.
Step 2. Now tap Turn Off App & Website Activity at the bottom. A confirmation sheet will appear. Tap the same option again and then enter your Screen Time passcode.
Wait a few seconds for the setting to apply and halt syncing across iCloud.

Step 3. Once done, tap Turn On App & Website Activity again. This refreshes the setting and clears the hold preventing the sign-out. Or, you can sign out immediately, before turning the setting back on.
Step 4. Head back to your Apple Account page in Settings and scroll to the bottom. You’ll now see the Sign Out button in red—active and working.

Fix 3: Turn Off Screen Time Passcode
This way works effectively, depending on the user feedback. However, note that Screen Time settings are somewhat meaningless without passcode protection, because they can be configured easily without authorization.
Step 1. Choose Screen Time in the Settings app.
Step 2. Select Change Screen Time Passcode in the bottom screen.
Step 3. Choose Turn Off Screen Time Passcode and confirm it with your Screen Time passcode.

If you forget your Screen Time passcode, you can reset it using your Apple ID password within the Settings app: in the Changing Screen Time Passcode screen, choose Forgot Passcode, enter your Apple ID password and set a new Screen Time passcode.
Fix 4: Turn Off Focus Sync and Status
Focus settings also sync across devices using iCloud, just like Screen Time. So, this can also trigger sign-out restrictions.
Steps to Disable Focus Settings
Step 1. In Settings, scroll down and tap Focus (just above Screen Time).
Step 2. Inside, disable the Share Across Devices toggle. Then, tap Focus Status, and on the next screen, turn it off.

If any Focus mode (like Sleep, Work, or Driving) are currently active, swipe into the Control Center and end it manually. You don’t have to remove the mode, just exit the session so it no longer interferes.
Once these are done, return to your Apple ID settings, scroll down and the Sign Out option should now be visible in red.
Way 5: Reset iPhone Settings
This way is recommended by Apple staff to help wipe iOS glitches that cause the grey Sign-out button. After reset, you will need to configure your WiFi neworks and other personal settings. Besides, Screen Time will be off.
Step 1. Access the Settings app on your iPhone and choose General.
Step 2. Scroll down to choose Transfer or Reset iPhone.

Step 3. Tap Reset > Reset All Settings. Finally, enter your screen passcode to start the reset.

Way 6: Turn off Screen Time
If the above fixes don’t work for you, you can try to completely disable Screen Time feature to get the issue fixed. Next, we will show you the steps on iPhone, whether you have the passcode or not.
With Passcode
When you know the Screen Time passcode, disabling the feature is quick and direct. If you’re managing a child’s iPhone through Family Sharing, just remember: tap their name first and follow the same steps for their profile.
Step 1. Open Settings, scroll to Screen Time, and tap it.
Step 2. Scroll to the bottom, tap Turn Off Screen Time and confirm it.

After a moment, Screen Time will be disabled. Now, head back to your Apple ID page, scroll down and you’ll now see the Sign Out option appear in red.
Without Passcode
When you forget your Screen Time passcode, the first instinct is simply to reset it using your Apple ID password. However, sometimes that reset isn’t possible. For instance:
- You’ve forgotten your Apple ID password and can’t reset it.
- Screen Time was set up with an Apple ID you no longer have access to.
- Your device is managed by a parent and the Forgot Passcode option can’t be used because their phone is lost or they’ve forgotten their login themselves.
Don’t worry. That doesn’t mean you’re out of options. You can use Passixer iPhone Unlocker to remove Screen Time passcode entirely, so the Sign Out button reappears.
Passixer removes the Screen Time lock without affecting your apps, photos, Apple ID, or any other data. No reset, no sign-out and just the passcode gone. It works with any iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch model and runs on both Windows and Mac. Better yet, it smartly adapts to your iOS version. On iOS 11 or earlier, it reveals the forgotten passcode so you can turn it off yourself. On iOS 12 and up, it bypasses the restriction quietly in the background, bringing the Sign Out option back like it never left.
Steps to Disable Screen Time Without Passcode
Launch Passixer and select Screen Time from the main screen.
Connect your iPhone or iPad using a USB cable. Click Start.
Passixer detects your iOS version and takes the right path:
1. On iOS 11 or earlier: it will reveal the old Restrictions passcode using your iTunes backup. Use the code to turn off Screen Time manually and bring back the Sign Out option.
2. On iOS 12 and above: it removes the Screen Time passcode directly. Once done, go back to Settings > Apple ID and scroll down. You will find the Sign Out button is active again.
Fix 7: Disable MDM Restriction
If the Apple ID sign-out option is still greyed out, even after you’ve turned off Screen Time, the cause could be MDM (Mobile Device Management) profiles, which is often set up by schools, workplaces, or from past configurations from the previous owner. These profiles silently restrict key actions, including the ability to sign out of your Apple ID. However, you’re not stuck. Passixer iPhone Unlocker can handle this too.
Passixer’s MDM removal feature works whether the profile is protected by an admin password or has no removal option in the settings. Once MDM is cleared from your iPhone, you can log out and sign in with your own Apple ID freely without losing access or data.
Steps to Remove MDM Without Password
Launch Passixer and connect your iPhone or iPad using a USB cable. Next, select Remove MDM.
Click Start Removing under the Work Properly option.
Tap Start. If Find My is already off, the MDM lock will be removed instantly by Passixer. If it’s still on, follow the onscreen instructions to disable it. Once Find My is off, Passixer automatically clears the MDM profile.
After the MDM removal is done, the Sign Out option is restored and your device returns to full use.
With the device passcode or admin account & password, you can turn off MDM on the Settings app. Simply find the steps here.
